Chapter Thirteen

YOLANDA

My heart slams against my chest, my fingers scrambling over Inez’ torn flesh, trying to cover the oozing wound in her temple.

“Yoyo,” she whispers, tears streaming down her face. There’s so much blood already on her, there’s hardly any left to seep out of the bullet hole. Her face is mashed to pieces, already swollen from being hit.

The room is dark, I’m not sure where we are. The floor is nothing more than a pool of blood.

So much blood. I can feel it as it seeps through my jeans and onto my legs, clinging to me. Spreading through to my bones, so I can never wash it away.

I press down against her forehead with one hand, swiping her hair away from her tawny skin with the other. Sweat beads on the skin and her shaking body arches against mine.

Inez’ eyes meet mine and her lips part, but the words sound like they’re coming from underwater—garbled, unclear. “What? What is it?” I ask, my chest squeezing with panic.

“I’ll find whoever did this to you, I swear. I swear—” I choke on the promise. Inez’ blood slowly creeps down her face, covering everything. Until every inch of skin is stained red and her eyes sink into her skull, turning black.

The blood soaks into her flesh, and somehow turns it white. As her lips fade to the same pale color as her face, dark black lines creep through the flesh, turning her mouth black before my eyes.

“No, no, no,” I whimper, clinging to her body. Not again.

I can’t lose her again.

I think I’ve lost her before, somehow, but that doesn’t make sense. White hot pain sears through my head, and I shake it to ease the ache. When I look down at Inez again, her eyes fly open, blazing blue.

A deafening gunshot rings throughout the room.
